Led by a consortium of six Australian medical colleges—RANZCO, RACS, RANZCOG, CICM, RANZCR and RACMA—the project is committed to advancing excellence in medical supervision. Together, we are developing a suite of resources, including the SSTS online learning platform, to support clinical supervisors in their essential role across Australia’s healthcare system.
About SSTS
The Standardised Supervisor Training System (SSTS) project is an initiative funded by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care that strongly focuses on supporting supervisors in rural and remote areas of Australia. Its key goals are to:
- Support supervisors in rural and remote settings by providing targeted training and resources to build local capacity and strengthen medical education in these regions.
- Define supervisory role capabilities to establish clear expectations and guide best practices across clinical contexts.
- Develop a nationally relevant curriculum, training resources, selection processes, and performance feedback systems to ensure consistent and high-quality supervision.
- Improve the consistency of supervision across all medical specialties, promoting alignment and coherence in the learning experience.
- Embed cultural safety across every aspect of the project, ensuring supervision is respectful, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of all learners and communities.
The Medical Supervisor
Curriculum (MSC)
The Medical Supervisor Curriculum (MSC) sets the core capabilities for adequate clinical supervision, helping supervisors foster skills, knowledge, and professional identity in future medical specialists. Evidence-based and aligned with AMC requirements, the MSC is built on insights from 16 medical colleges, 166 supervisor opinions, and current research. It comprises seven core capability areas with essential and advanced competencies, offering a simple, practical, and adaptable framework to improve supervision quality, learner outcomes, and patient care.
SSTS Online Learning
The SSTS training approach is built around 21 scenario-based modules that reflect common supervisory challenges and promote best practices. These scenarios form the core of the SSTS Online Learning platform and are presented using a micro-learning (just-in-time) approach, each taking approximately 10 minutes to complete.
Scenarios are tailored to rural, remote and metropolitan clinical settings, allowing supervisors to engage in targeted, practical learning that fits their busy schedules.
The scenarios are intentionally generic to ensure broad applicability across medical specialties and contexts. Each scenario includes a dedicated section with reflective questions, enabling supervisors to contextualise their learning to their practice.
Each scenario is grounded in evidence-informed design principles to ensure consistency, relevance, and meaningful application.
Why should you do this training?
The Standardised Supervisor Training builds the core capabilities you need for effective supervision in remote, regional and metropolitan settings. Realistic scenarios provide the background for the development of practical skills which can be implemented in busy clinical settings.
Each scenario based learning snippet takes around 10 minutes to complete and the full package around 70 minutes. The package is supported by a Supervisor Handbook providing templates and resources to lighten your supervisory load. You can also claim CPD for this training.
